About human receptors
Emotions today cannot only be discovered in our own body parts or those of high developed animals. They also rush through another network that is not made of nerves and synapses but of wires and servers. On the Internet separate developing components contribute to a complex evolving system, that is far more than the sum of its parts and therefore very similar to an organism. The biochemical senses which trigger this "super nervous system" are "human receptors". As we write down how we feel right now, e.g on a weblog, the Internet gains what we might call a mental state.
pulse captures this current emotional condition and gives it a physical appearance. In real time the Internet animates an object, that represents all emotions a human may feel, as it is created according to Robert Plutchik's human emotion theory.
On the other hand the organic material of the rubber tree, embedded in a medical apparatus and constrained by operation filaments, reminds of earlier attempts to create life, e.g. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's novel "Frankenstein". Today's obsession for "emerging technologies" seems quite similar to the technophilia of the 19th century.
Technological explanation
pulse visualizes live the recent emotional expressions, written on private weblog communities like blogger.com. Weblog entries are compared to a list of emotions, which refers to Robert Plutchik's "Psychoevolutionary Theory of Emotion" (1980).
Plutchik describes eight basic human emotions: joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, anticipation. He developed a diagram in which those eight emotions, together with their weakened and amplified alternatives, form a three dimensional cone, consisting of 24 areas. This cone is the basic shape of
pulse, which can enlarge in the 24 directions of the different emotions. Each time an emotion or a synonym of it is found in a recent blog entry, the shape-shifting object transforms itself in a way that the new volume represents a piece of the Internet's current emotional condition.
